Global Housing Programs

The housing crisis is global. We partner with Habitat organizations internationally to ensure no one is left behind.

A global response to the housing crisis

The global housing crisis is an urgent challenge that demands action. Over 1.6 billion people around the world are living without access to adequate housing, and the need for sustainable, affordable solutions has never been greater.

As a global organization with a presence in over 70 countries, Habitat for Humanity is uniquely positioned to lead the charge in addressing the housing crisis.

We work alongside governments, local communities, non-profit organizations, and private sector partners to build homes, communities and hope through housing solutions.

Building impact, one home at a time

We believe that being a good global neighbour means looking beyond our own communities to support those facing housing insecurity worldwide. Through our Global Neighbours program, we partner with high-priority countries across Africa, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean to improve access to quality, affordable homes around the world.

Our home-for-home approach reflects the power of community: when a home is built or renovated in Canada, local Habitats also contribute to an international project in coordination with local Habitat country offices. This investment ensures our impact extends far beyond our borders.

With the generosity of donors and local Habitats, we stand alongside our global neighbors to partner on life-changing projects in countries such as Guatemala, Haiti, Vietnam, Côte d'Ivoire, and Malawi.

Transforming Lives in Côte d’Ivoire

In rural Côte d’Ivoire, cocoa-farming families face critical challenges: limited access to clean water, inadequate sanitation, and deep-rooted gender disparities. Women, who provide 80% of food production labor, are undervalued and excluded from essential agricultural resources.

Habitat Canada, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Côte d’Ivoire, is launching a transformative initiative to improve WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) access, enhance food security, and economically empower women in the Gôh-Djiboua District. By increasing access to clean water and sanitation, we will improve maternal and child health, reduce disease, and create new opportunities for women in agriculture and entrepreneurship.

Empowering families of children with disabilities in Malawi

In Malawi’s Dedza district, extreme weather, poverty, and inadequate housing leave children with disabilities and their families highly vulnerable. Many homes lack accessibility, are made of unstable materials, and pose daily risks to their inhabitants.

Through the Circles of Care project, Habitat Canada, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Malawi and the Malawi Council for Disability Affairs, are constructing climate-resilient, disability-friendly homes while providing vocational training, land rights education, and economic empowerment resources. This initiative provides improved living conditions and support for caregivers, and helps shift societal attitudes toward disability inclusion.
