Homeownership for Black families

Our focus on equity opens doors to homeownership for underrepresented families

Breaking down barriers to homeownership

At Habitat for Humanity Canada, we know that access to homeownership transforms lives and strengthens communities. However, homeownership in Canada is not equal. Systemic barriers have led to a significant racial homeownership gap, particularly among Black families who have a disproportionate lack of homeownership opportunities.

To address this disparity, in 2020 we launched the Black Families Funding Initiative, a groundbreaking partnership with the Government of Canada through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. This initiative is partially fueled by a $20 million federal investment to support the construction of 200 homes across Canada for families that identify as Black.

Together, we're creating new homeownership opportunities for Black families across the country.

A transformative partnership for lasting impact

As we approach the culmination of this transformative partnership in 2026, its impact is evident. Through this dedicated funding, almost 200 homes have been built with and for Black families, helping them to achieve the dream of homeownership while building financial equity and brighter futures.

Together, let’s build a more equitable path to homeownership

Collaboration is at the heart of this success. If your organization is interested in working with us to close the racial homeownership gap and would like to find out more about partnering on this important initiative, please contact at partnerships@habitat.ca.
