Since 2022, Habitat for Humanity Canada has commissioned an annual survey measuring Canadians’ views of the housing crisis and its impact. Our most recent survey data was released in November 2024.
Unaffordable housing a top concern
Housing affordability is at a breaking point, and Canadians are feeling it — both for themselves and for future generations. The rising cost of living is making it harder than ever to access stable housing, putting financial security, well-being, and opportunity at risk.

The majority of survey respondents (84%) say that buying a home feels like a luxury.
88% of renters say the goal of owning a home in Canada has become out of reach.
A home is more than housing
The housing crisis is no longer just about housing. Canadians believe it is having a ripple effect, taking a toll on Canadian society and quality of life.

74% of respondents agree that communities are being fractured by a lack of appropriate housing for low- and middle-income people.
Over half of respondents (59%) worry about sacrificing other basic needs like food, living essentials, clothing, and education in order to afford their rent or mortgage payments.
