Affordable housing survey

Since 2022, Habitat for Humanity Canada has commissioned an annual survey measuring Canadians’ views of the housing crisis and its impact. Our most recent survey data was released in November 2024.

Unaffordable housing a top concern

Housing affordability is at a breaking point, and Canadians are feeling it — both for themselves and for future generations. The rising cost of living is making it harder than ever to access stable housing, putting financial security, well-being, and opportunity at risk.

>> Lack of housing ranked as a top concern for Canadians for the third consecutive year, alongside inflation and access to health care.

The majority of survey respondents (84%) say that buying a home feels like a luxury.

88% of renters say the goal of owning a home in Canada has become out of reach.

A home is more than housing

The housing crisis is no longer just about housing. Canadians believe it is having a ripple effect, taking a toll on Canadian society and quality of life.

82% of Canadians are worried the lack of affordable housing is contributing to shrinking the middle class.

74% of respondents agree that communities are being fractured by a lack of appropriate housing for low- and middle-income people.

Over half of respondents (59%) worry about sacrificing other basic needs like food, living essentials, clothing, and education in order to afford their rent or mortgage payments.

The value of homeownership

As a country, we continue to believe in homeownership — not just as a milestone, but as a foundation for stronger families, communities, and futures.

Survey respondents indicate that homeownership can:

87% of Canadians believe homeownership can create more stability in one’s life, 86% believe it can strengthen your financial future, 81% believe it can lead to a better future for your children.

Responding to the challenge

At Habitat for Humanity Canada, we know the housing crisis can be solved — but only if we take bold action. Now is the time to build solutions, mobilize change, and ensure that homeownership remains possible for generations to come.
