In Honduras, better health starts with a home

In 2024, Habitat for Humanity Canada helped 5,600 people beyond our borders experience the life altering impacts of having an improved place to call home.
In La Campa, Honduras, one of those families is Maria, her husband, and their eight-year-old son. Like many families in their community, they lived in a clay brick house with a dirt floor and an open cooking fire that filled their home with smoke day after day.
It posed serious health risks — from parasitic infections that thrive in dirt floors to respiratory issues caused by indoor smoke exposure. The poor air in their home affected all of their health, especially their young son’s.
Supported by Habitat Canada donors, Habitat for Humanity Honduras gave Maria’s home two critical improvements: a concrete floor and an eco-friendly stove that produces less smoke and requires less firewood. Both have transformed their daily lives.
“The changes in our home have made such a big difference — we even feel healthier.”

The impact extends beyond physical health. Her son now has a clean, safe space to study and play. Maria spends less time gathering firewood and more time with her family.
“I thank with all my heart those who made this dream a reality,” Maria says. “They don’t even know us, yet they have the desire to support those in need.”
