Habitat leaders bring affordable homeownership message to Parliament Hill

Last week, Habitat for Humanity leaders gathered in Ottawa for Habitat on the Hill, meeting with parliamentarians across parties to advocate for federal investment in affordable homeownership.

Affordable homeownership belongs in Canada's housing strategy

In more than 50 meetings with MPs, we brought a message that was well received: Canadians need access to the entire housing continuum, including affordable homeownership.

Throughout the day, we highlighted Habitat's role as a trusted partner in delivering scalable housing solutions. Federal investments in Habitat projects are leveraged at a minimum ratio of 1:2, unlocking additional provincial, municipal and private-sector investment.

Through partnerships, philanthropy and government support, Habitat has built a model that creates lasting affordability while expanding access to homeownership for families who would otherwise be unable to enter the market.

With an established nationwide pipeline of housing projects, a proven track record of catalyzing federal investments and a mission focused on delivering measurable impact, Habitat is well positioned to help the federal housing agency, Build Canada Homes, deliver on its commitments.

Building opportunity for families and communities

The need is clear. Research released this month from Habitat for Humanity International found that 56% of Canadians who don't own a home say they never expect to become homeowners, the highest percentage across 22 countries surveyed. A lack of housing affordability is driving Canadians' pessimism.

The benefits of affordable homeownership extend beyond housing. Research shows that access to stable, affordable homeownership provides families with a foundation for stability, security, and financial equity. Habitat homeowners experience improvements in health, employment and education outcomes. Household incomes increase, on average, 28% more than those of similar renters, while increased productivity among homeowners generates an estimated $35 million in additional annual economic benefit.

A trusted nationwide delivery partner

Habitat on the Hill was an opportunity to demonstrate how affordable homeownership can help more Canadians access safe, decent and affordable housing while delivering measurable social and economic impact. We look forward to continuing the conversation with parliamentarians about the important role of affordable homeownership in Canada's housing continuum.
