Mexico is a country rich in history, culture, and vibrant traditions. From bustling urban centers to remote rural villages, it is home to over 128 million people. However, despite its economic growth, millions of families still struggle with inadequate housing and lack access to basic services. In Mexico, more than 8.8 million homes face housing insecurity, with families living in overcrowded conditions or in structures made from non-durable materials. Additionally, nearly 23.7 million people lack access to clean drinking water, adequate sanitation, or electricity, making daily life a challenge for many.
Tlaxcala, one of Mexico’s smallest yet most historically rich states, is where Habitat for Humanity Canada and its partners are making a difference. Nearly 60% of the population lives in poverty, with many families residing in homes without proper flooring, durable walls, or access to running water. Through Habitat Mexico’s initiative, families receive housing support that includes sustainable solutions such as rainwater harvesting, eco stoves, and sanitation improvements.
As a Global Village volunteer, you will work shoulder-to-shoulder with local families, assisting in constructing safe, resilient homes and participating in cultural exchanges that deepen your understanding of the community. Your tasks may include mixing mortar, laying concrete blocks, reinforcing structures, and assisting with other essential construction activities. Beyond the build, volunteers will immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Tlaxcala, engaging in traditional activities such as handcrafting, mural visits, and local cuisine experiences.
This is more than just a volunteer opportunity—it’s a chance to be part of something meaningful. Join us in building homes, creating hope, and fostering lasting connections with a community that welcomes you with open arms. Together, we can change lives—both theirs and yours.

Volunteers play a vital role in building safe, sustainable homes and improving living conditions for families in need.
As a Global Village volunteer, you will work alongside local construction teams, Habitat staff, and the partner family to construct resilient housing using sustainable and locally adapted building techniques. No prior construction experience is necessary—just a willingness to learn, work hard, and make a lasting impact!
Typical Volunteer Tasks:
The key activities that the volunteers will develop are:
- Ground Preparation: Digging, leveling, and compacting the earth to prepare a solid foundation.
- Foundation Slab: Prepare the concrete mix to build the foundation of the house.
- Build walls: gluing solid blocks that will give structure and support to the house.
- Castle casting: Fill the metal structures that will support the house with concrete mixture.
- Active participation: Assisting with additional tasks as directed by the Habitat's construction team.
Through peer-to-peer fundraising, Global Village volunteers contribute a program and build donation that will advance Habitat’s work in communities with the greatest housing needs. Meet your team leader, Arlette Denton!

Hola! My name is Arlette Denton.
My time volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in El Salvador was a powerful experience, and I am honored to be serving in Mexico next. Mexico is where I was born and raised, so this project feels especially close to my heart!
Before making Calgary my home in 2023, I lived in several cities across the USA (from Texas to Alaska). Beyond my deep passion for community service, I love traveling and creating memories with my husband, Brett, and our daughter, Julianna - who I’m thrilled to have joining me on this build!
Hope you too can join us!!
