Youth Skills Building

Empowering youth and strengthening communities to build a brighter, more equitable future for all

Together, we build a stronger future

Canada is in the midst of a severe shortage of skilled tradespeople that’s directly affecting the affordable housing crisis.

By the end of this decade, nearly 700,000 tradespeople will retire, slowing construction and driving up costs to build. At the same time, many young people, especially from marginalized communities, are struggling to enter the workforce.

Our Every Youth Initiative offers a solution. It equips young people with trade skills while creating pathways for them to contribute to their communities. By investing in this next generation of talent, we can reshape the future and meet Canada’s housing challenges head-on.

How it works: youth volunteering and advocacy

Our Every Youth Initiative offers hands-on training for youth aged 16 to 29 in construction, retail, and trade skills. Training is offered at no cost to participants, is run by local Habitats, and is tailored to meet specific community needs.

Many participants are considered at-risk based on limited access to opportunities and education. Every participant receives mentorship, career coaching, and the opportunity for paid positions upon completing their training.

With a focus on practical learning and community involvement, the Every Youth Initiative helps at an individual, professional and community level by:

  • Building skills: We inspire youth to consider careers in the trades, closing the gap of skilled tradespeople and gaining life skills in the process.
  • Strengthening communities: Empowered youth help to create empowered communities. The program encourages participants to develop life skills and community spirit.
  • Creating advocates: Through this program, youth become passionate advocates for affordable and sustainable housing.

Build the workforce of tomorrow, today

Join us in shaping a future where skilled tradespeople are plentiful, and at-risk youth thrive. We’re looking for partners to help us reach 1,400 youth by 2028, including an increase in programs for Indigenous youth.
