Our team will work alongside local staff and homeowners in Gracias Lempira, Honduras. For more than 30 years, Habitat for Humanity Honduras has helped families living in substandard and unhealthy conditions and has provided 13,032 families with new housing across the country. Through shelter, we empower Honduran families.

Global Village is a meaningful short-term international volunteer experience with opportunities around the world. By working closely with Habitat country programs, volunteer groups partner with local communities, building or improving homes as part of Habitat’s vision of a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. Upon return, Global Village participants become champions for resilient housing and advocates for Habitat’s work.

The Housing Need in Honduras

The country’s housing deficit exceeds 1.3 million units. Gracias, one of the oldest cities in Honduras, is located in the western highlands of the state of Lempira. The population primarily depends on agriculture, cultivating crops like coffee, cinnamon, allspice, corn and beans. We are working with the Indigenous Lenca people, who are among the poorest in the country and rely on subsistence farming. Improving the current homes of the Lenca people enhances the health of entire families and communities. Their houses, typically made of adobe or mud bricks and wattle and daub materials, will be renovated to include new floors, roofs, latrines and stuccoed walls.

DAY 1 | Saturday: Arrival in Honduras

Your journey begins today with your arrival at Villeda Morales Airport (SAP) in San Pedro Sula. A Habitat for Humanity representative will meet you at the airport (look for the Habitat logo sign). The entire team will then embark on a 4-hour drive together to the town of Gracias, Lempira. Upon arrival at your hotel, you’ll have time to settle in and relax after the journey. In the evening, you’ll gather as a team for a welcome dinner, where you’ll receive an overview of the exciting week ahead.

DAY 2 | Sunday: Orientation and Community Introduction

After breakfast at the hotel, the Habitat for Humanity Honduras (HFHH) staff will provide an orientation session to introduce you to the country’s housing issues, HFHH's approach, and the specific community you’ll be working with. You'll then travel to the construction site, where you'll have lunch with the family and affiliate staff. The afternoon will be spent visiting the community to familiarize yourself with the build site and the surrounding area. In the evening, you’ll return to the hotel for dinner and a time for reflection and discussion about the day's experiences.

DAY 3 | Monday: Build Day and Community Walk

Our first construction day begins with distributing safety equipment, receiving a safety briefing, and introducing the families, masons, and some of the neighbours with whom we will work during the week. You’ll work closely with the family and local community members on tasks such as laying concrete blocks, building smokeless stoves, or constructing concrete floors. The day will also include a walk around the neighbourhood, designed to familiarize volunteers with the settlement’s main characteristics, problems, and advantages. This visit aims to help volunteers understand the needs and way of life of the community.

DAY 4, 5 & 6 | Tuesday to Thursday: Build Days

Over the next few days, you will see the new house or housing improvements take shape. Each day will start with breakfast at the hotel before heading out to the construction site, where you’ll work closely with the family and local community members.

One of these days will also feature a Social Learning Exchange, designed to foster the sharing of cultures, ideas, practices and experiences between Global Village volunteers and local community members. This activity may involve learning about local culture, the community's income sources or environmental practices.

Each evening, you’ll return to the hotel for dinner, where you’ll enjoy traditional Honduran food, including tostones, fried plantains, rice and beans, cheese, vegetables and good coffee. This will be followed by opportunities for reflection and sharing insights from the day’s work.

DAY 7 | Friday: Farewell Celebration

On your final workday, you'll continue building in the morning, putting the finishing touches on your project. After lunch, you’ll participate in a farewell ceremony with the community, which may include cultural performances, traditional game, and a celebration with the family. In the afternoon, you’ll travel back to San Pedro Sula where you’ll have your final dinner with the group.

DAY 8 | Saturday: Departure from Honduras

After breakfast at the hotel, you’ll be transported as a group back to Villeda Morales Airport (SAP) in San Pedro Sula for your departure home. As your build week concludes, the lasting life experiences will continue to fuel your commitment to championing safe and secure housing for everyone.

Typical Housing Solutions

Our build solutions include constructing brand-new houses and renovating existing homes to enhance living conditions for families. Renovation efforts focus on critical improvements such as:

  • Installing smokeless stoves to promote better air quality and reduce health risks.
  • Applying whitewash to walls for improved sanitation and aesthetics.
  • Upgrading dirt floors to polished concrete to enhance durability and hygiene.
  • Building latrines to ensure proper sanitation and hygiene.

Each improvement aims to elevate the overall health and quality of life for families and their communities. For instance, supporting the renovation of homes for the Lenca People—which are traditionally constructed from adobe, mud bricks, and wattle and daub materials—can lead to significant benefits. Proposed renovations include new floors, roofs, latrines and stucco walls, all contributing to healthier living environments for families.

Typical Volunteer Tasks

Volunteers will support local labour and families by:

  1. Mixing mortar with limestone for the walls
  2. Pouring concrete floors
  3. Digging holes for latrines
  4. Making clay ovens
  5. Making adobe bricks
  6. Laying blocks

Through peer-to-peer fundraising, Global Village volunteers contribute a program and build donation that will advance Habitat’s work in communities with the greatest housing needs. Build donations cover volunteer accommodations, meals and ground transportation. Crucially, the program donations also directly support Habitat’s housing programs in the countries.
