Building for Accessibility

Accessibility isn’t an afterthought — it’s a foundation that makes homeownership possible for all.

Building homes where everyone belongs

Imagine a young family whose child suddenly needs a wheelchair, or a family who want to stay in their home as they grow older.

In both cases, an accessible home can make all the difference – providing safety, independence, and stability without the need for costly renovations.

Increasingly, Habitat for Humanity builds homes with accessibility in mind, ensuring they meet families’ evolving needs. These homes contribute to Canada’s affordable housing supply and follow recognized approaches to ensuring accessibility:

  • Visitable homes allow visitors with mobility challenges to easily access key areas. Features include entryways without stairs or steps, doorways wide enough for wheelchairs and other assistive devices, and an accessible bathroom on the main floor.
  • Universal design refers to homes that are functional and comfortable for everyone, regardless of age or ability. For example, wider hallways and easy-to-reach light switches ensure the space works for a variety of needs.

By building with accessibility in mind from the start, families have a home that grows with them.
