A place to put down roots
When families have a safe and affordable place to call home, they have the foundation they need to thrive. For Aimee and Simon, finding that foundation took years of perseverance.
With young children in tow, the family moved homes in central B.C. six times in four years as they searched for housing they could afford. At one point, they toured nearly 50 rental properties, hoping each one might be the place they where could finally settle. Instead, they found themselves living in a trailer with mold, mice and poor insulation, sleeping in the living room during the winter because it was the only room warm enough to use.

When their landlord eventually gave notice, Aimee and Simon were once again competing with dozens of other families for the same rentals.
Like many families across Canada, they weren't looking for luxury. They simply wanted a home where their children could feel secure.
Months after applying to Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC's Affordable Homeownership Program, they received the news they had been hoping for: they were approved to purchase a Habitat home.
“It was like our Christmas present." - Aimee, homeowner
The home had already been part of another Habitat success story. After the previous homeowners transitioned to market homeownership, the house became available for a new family ready to take the next step.
For Aimee and Simon, it marked the beginning of a new chapter.
Today, the family is flourishing. With an affordable mortgage geared to their income, they have more room to think beyond day-to-day housing concerns. Simon pursued additional credentials to advance his career, while Habitat's financial education program helped them build the confidence to manage their finances and start saving for their children's education.
"Our financial situation went from dire to manageable to excelling. This place has given us things we've never experienced before," says Aimee.
The impact reaches far beyond finances. Their home has become a gathering place for friends and neighbours and a space where they can invest in the people and community around them.
Instead of worrying about where they'll live next, Aimee and Simon can focus on raising their children, pursuing their goals and creating opportunities for the future.
"It's not a day-to-day struggle anymore. It's just beautiful to really experience life for what it's meant to be."
