The ReStore Flip: Turning Hidden Gems into Showpieces
DIYers, decorators, and renovators already know that Habitat ReStore is the destination for unexpected finds and incredible value. From gently used furniture to brand-new building materials, every visit is a chance to uncover something unique and make your space your own.
To show what’s possible, we teamed up with two of Canada’s most creative DIY influencers to put ReStore finds to the test. The result? Two inspiring transformations that prove a little imagination can go a long way.
Restore Reimagined: DIY In Progress
Danie Berger of DIY In Progress — a passionate DIY creator and self-described “professional idea-chaser” — transformed a simple thrifted dresser into a stunning statement piece. After finding a deep blue wooden dresser at ReStore — a place she says, “has never let me down when I need a unique piece,” she stripped it back and rebuilt it with her signature flair. Incorporating ornate spindle details, a bold black finish and even floral wallpaper tucked inside the drawers, Danie completely

reimagined the piece into a custom cabinet that feels equal parts functional and magical. It’s no surprise she called it one of her favourite thrift flips to date.
The One-Day Challenge: Handyman Graham
Graham Hayes of Handyman Graham, known for his budget-friendly, sustainability-focused projects, took on a one-day challenge and delivered. After describing ReStore as “like the home goods section of a Value Village, but basically the whole store,” he picked up a vintage wooden door with big potential. He soon decided it would make the perfect gift for Alexandra Gater, the influential DIY and home design creator, transforming it into a one-of-a-kind piece. What followed was a full transformation: sanding, painting it a soft muted blue, and adding a custom-built wooden flower detail paired with brass hardware for a playful daisy-inspired finish. Topped off with modern window film for added texture and privacy, the final piece was both stylish and functional, earning an enthusiastic reaction from Gater at the reveal.

Beyond the creativity, every ReStore purchase helps Habitat for Humanity create more opportunities for families through affordable homeownership. These projects are a reminder that great design doesn’t have to come with a high price tag — and that sometimes, the best finds are the ones you transform yourself.
