With HST relief, we can partner with more Ontario families to become homeowners

Habitat for Humanity Canada applauds the Ontario government’s commitment to providing HST relief to new homebuyers, retroactive to May 27, 2025. This measure directly benefits homeowners who partner with us and allows us to reinvest those savings into building more homes for Ontario families.

We have been anxiously awaiting this relief from HST, a tax we often absorb to keep costs affordable for families. With costs of land, construction, labour, and other fees increasing dramatically, the additional burden of HST can impact whether an affordable housing project is financially feasible.

For every 100 Habitat homes we build, this measure could help us deliver 5 to 13 additional homes — and build partnerships with more Ontario families on the path to affordable homeownership.

We look forward to learning more details in Ontario’s 2025 Fall Economic Statement, and we urge the federal government to quickly pass its GST relief measures.
