Global Village is a meaningful short-term international volunteer experience with opportunities around the world. By working closely with Habitat country programs, volunteer groups partner with local communities, building or improving homes as part of Habitat’s vision of a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. Upon return, Global Village participants become champions for resilient housing and advocates for Habitat’s work.
Why we build in An Giang:
Siem Reap Province is one of the poorest provinces in Cambodia. Even though Siem Reap is home to Angkor Wat and many other religious sites and is a major tourist destination, it still has great poverty, with approximately 27 percent of households living below the provincial poverty line and there are still many issues preventing the poor in Siem Reap from gaining improved access to housing, economic opportunities, living conditions, and health. According to the geographical features of the region in Cambodia, Siem Reap is regularly affected by floods, flash floods, drought, and storms.
Through this project, Habitat works in 2 districts and 1 municipality in Siem Reap province. The project contributes to SDGs 1, 3, 6, 11, 13 (No poverty, good health & wellbeing, clean water & sanitation, sustainable cities & communities, and climate change). It aims to strengthen resilience of communities, empower women and improve the housing and socioeconomic conditions of 36,323 community members in 18 villages.
