Is this build opportunity for me?
Indigenous Housing Partnership
July 11 - 18
~$1,800 + air transportation
In 2019, six detached homes were built by the First Nation and Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce. This was the first housing project in Ontario where Habitat for Humanity partnered with a First Nation to build housing on reserve as the primary contractor. Four hundred volunteers, including volunteers from the First nation, the homeowners, and Habitat for Humanity, provided more than 8,000 hours to this innovative project.
Overall, the project marked the 10th house for the Neyaashiinigmiing Rent to Own Program at Kaikaiknong Crescent, which is part of a new 18 lot development in partnership with Habitat Grey Bruce with major funding for the construction of the houses from Indigenous Services Canada, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and the Tachane Foundation along with donation from local businesses and organizations.
Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce
The need for affordable housing continues to increase in many communities throughout Grey and Bruce counties. The average waiting list for assisted rental housing is about three years forcing many families to pay high rent in often substandard units.
There are nearly 2 billion people around the world who live in inadequate housing and more than 100 million are homeless. Habitat helps by building or renovating simple, decent houses in partnership with those in need. Not only do we want to be building homes here we are also committed to supporting the construction of homes internationally through annual contributions to Habitat Canada’s Global Neighbours Alliance.

Meet your team leader: Ernie Fraser
Hello - my name is Ernie Fraser and I have been involved with Global Village for many years. Since 2006, I have participated in 21 Global village builds and been the team leader on 20 builds in Eastern Europe, Asia-Pacific, South America, the United States, and Canada (Yukon, Prince Edward Island, Iqaluit and Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick). I find volunteering with Global Village provides unique cultural experiences and an opportunity to give a "hand up" to a family wanting to improve their housing situation. We also get to work alongside local people and meet like-minded people from across Canada who often become long-term friends. As always, I am excited to lead this build and hope you will join me in supporting an Indigenous family here in our own country.
