Monday, October 4, 2010 is World Habitat Day
Celebrated by the United Nations and the international community since 1985, World Habitat Day is a time to reflect on the world’s housing crisis and to consider how our towns and cities are performing relative to the basic right to adequate shelter for all. The day is intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.

We urge you to mark this day – Donate, Participate or Advocate – for safe affordable housing!

Approach Your Local Candidate Before An Upcoming Election
For the 2008 Federal Election, we sent a communiqué to all candidates and invited them to join Habitat for Humanity in making affordable housing a key issue in the election campaign and, more importantly, in future policies of the next government.

As you near your own local, provincial or federal election day - or at any time of year - remember to ask your local political candidates this question:
"What are you doing to make the dream of homeownership more attainable for low income families in your community and across Canada?"

Amazing Things Happen to People When You Address Them
For years, our work has allowed us to see incredible things happen when people build a home. But even more incredible is seeing how home builds people. Because when people have access to affordable, suitable, adequate housing in all its forms—from Habitat homes to public housing units—their lives improve 100%.

People gain the stability they need to find and keep a job. Families can plant roots and become proud, connected members of a community. Seniors and people with special needs can live with a sense of well-being and independence. New Canadians can pursue the brighter future that first led them to this country. And lives of homelessness can become lives of hope.

By building people, home is also building something else: our country. A well-housed population is one that can create thriving communities, forge new opportunities, and make Canada a home to everything it stands for as a nation—a place where all people deserve a chance to build a better life.

Habitat for Humanity believes that chance should be at every Canadian’s doorstep.
